Joanna + Tyler
When I first got Joanna’s email, I was taken back by her name, it’s rare that I come across a Joanna, which is my twin sister’s name. Then I read the groom’s name, Tyler-my best friend’s son’s name. Not exceptionally coincidental except for the fact my sister and best friend’s son, who were incredible people full of life and love, both passed away too young. My sister was actually the original florist of the two of us, and working with flowers is a constant reminder of her spirit. When I saw this lovely couple was getting married on the weekend Tyler passed away, I knew this wedding would evoke a lot of emotion for me, but Joanna struck me as an especially warm person and I was intrigued. Sure enough I got to know Joanna and her mother quite well, Tyler was lovely, and the wedding was a nice way for me to remember and reflect while at the same time celebrating family and this young couple (and their precious daughter).
Joanna and Tyler were married at Oak Bay Beach Hotel and I feel you don’t need to do any floral design for a ceremony with a backdrop like that. The only florals we created for the ceremony, other than the bouquets, were to make little posies of blue delphiniums to hang on the pew markers.
I feel Joanna’s bouquet was one of the prettiest I made all summer, and I think it’s because I made it organically while thinking of my sister. Those are the most stunning arrangements because they have a whimsical, natural, unique look that can’t be replicated.
XOX, Joanna and Tyler, and your family. Thank you for asking me to be a part of your special day. It is one I will always remember.

Bretton + Chris
The adorable, fun-loving Bretton and Chris travelled from Alberta to be married in at her father’s home in beautiful Fanny Bay, which is just past Qualicum on the east coast of Vancouver Island.
Bretton asked for a natural, rustic bouquet with lots of foliage because of the wedding’s west coast setting. We used muted coloured roses, lysmachia, magnolia, eucalyptus, olive and rex begonia foliage.

The bridesmaids carried striking posies of solid baby’s breath (I think baby’s breath is great when it’s used in a mass like this). We were originally going to spray paint the baby’s breath gold to tie the bridal party colours into the overall wedding palette, but ultimately we decided to go for a more sophisticated look by using goal ribbons, which complemented the royal blue gowns.
The flower girl’s head wreath was made of olive leaf and spray roses.

These awesome letters were made by Emma from Barb’s team out of Italian Ruscus were a really cool addition.
The dinner was on long harvest tables, and to evoke the natural surroundings we used greenery and simple potted plants and bud vases of soft white blooms. This worked well because there wasn’t a lot of room on the tables for decor since it was a family-style meal.
One of our services is floral styling, and if that’s a new term to you, like it is to many people, this wedding is an example of where we were the floral stylists. Floral styling is not so much creating arrangements as taking a few floral elements and a few decor elements and styling them to create little vignettes on places like the bar, welcome tables, lounge areas and the ceremony site.
The garland we created with mostly salal and silver dollar and we made it onsite and attached it to the ceiling and then lined the perimeter of the tent with plumosa ferns.

Katie + Ryan
Katie and Ryan are so incredible, apart and together. Their vision for their west coast, intimate wedding was inspirational and we had a blast pulling lush garden flowers in their water-colour palette that perfectly suited their location in the Saanich Inlet. Delphiniums, english roses, peonies, and so much more overflowed to create a look of abundance, joy and romance.

The ceremony was held on the Brentwood Lodge restaurant’s breathtaking patio. There’s nothing like it-and it has the added bonus of a very inconspicuous and attractive awning providing shade from the summer sun.
Look at that lush backdrop… the water, mountains, forest and flowers. It’s such a joy to add our creative touches to this space.

And then it was party time in the Lodge’s restaurant!

Congrats, Katie and Ryan. All our love, Vanessa and the Verbena crew. XOX

Keirstan + Ryan
Keirstan and Ryan hail from Edmonton, but chose the beautiful Pacific Ocean as the backdrop for their vows. Set at Oak Bay Beach Hotel, their wedding had a laid-back glitz and sparkle to it that perfectly suited the magical event.
I met Keirstan and Ryan once before the wedding and was struck by how appreciative they were, and how excited Keirstan was. It’s so fun to create for a bride like Keirstan, and she didn’t disappoint me: as I knocked on her hotel room door to deliver the flowers, I could hear her and her ladies’ pure glee, and the look on her face when she saw the flowers was just incredible. It’s a pretty amazing feeling to create something that takes a bride’s breath away and makes her so happy on her special day. Their families were also very welcoming and a pleasure to work with.
We worked with peaches, creams, blushes, golds, which was a popular palette of the summer. Keirstan had a vision that came together so beautifully-as you can see!
Victoria’s Broken Strings was the band, and sounded fantastic. They had the place hopping and everyone had a fantastic time in this gorgeous setting.
